Why You Should Do a First Look

Let’s start with the basics. What is a first look? A first look is when the Bride and Groom have a private moment before their ceremony to see each other for the first time. A first look isn’t for everyone which is totally fine. As a professional, I am a little biased to first looks and think they’re a great idea. Here are a few reasons why a first look might be a good idea for you.

A first look is a private moment for just the Bride & Groom

If you do a first look you get to prioritize a time for just you two. The entire day is going to be filled with tons of people around you with literally all eyes on you. Setting aside a time for you both to be together helps put less stress on the day.

No pressure for a “reaction” during the ceremony

Speaking of stress! If you do a first look you won’t have the pressure of some grand reaction while you’re walking down the aisle. Let’s be honest it is a tremendous amount of pressure for a groom to have a “good reaction” to his bride coming down the aisle. Some people don’t want to get emotional with a crowd of people staring at them. You can still have an amazing reaction and maybe even a better reaction if its a private moment between the two of you.

A first look gives you more time to relax after the ceremony and more time with each other

If you have a first look chances are most of your wedding photos like bridal portraits and family photos will be done before the ceremony. From a schedule stand point this is ideal because it gives you more time to hang out with your guest directly after the ceremony and enjoy cocktail hour. Another bonus is that you get to spend more time with each other. Most Bride and Groom don’t get any alone time on their wedding day and even less time with each other if they don’t see each other until the ceremony. The first look happens earlier in the day so you get to actually spend the day together.

So, does a first look sound right for you?

Just a few reasons why I am an absolute advocate for a first look but I understand that it’s not for everyone. The important thing is to include moments into your wedding schedule that feel like you. Do what makes you both comfortable and happy. Try your best to keep the stress to a minimum and understand that this is your day not anyone else’s.
